QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT MASTECTOMY FITTINGS

QUESTION

I have just been diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  What now?

ANSWER

There are several stages to the healing process after a mastectomy.  Directly after a mastectomy, the surgeon will prescribe a camisole with pockets to contain any drainage tubes.  After the surgery site has healed, the physician will prescribe a weighted or leisure breast form to restore weight and balance.  A certified fitter can help find the right products for women going thru, chemo, radiation, a lumpectomy, or reconstruction.

QUESTION

I have not healed enough to wear a bra and do not look balanced in my clothing.  What can I do to look more even in my clothing?

ANSWER

Small busy prints, dark colors, layers, flowy fabric, ruffles, and scarfs are great ways to camouflage your surgery site.  Remember you are a strong beautiful woman!

QUESTION

Why do I need a special bra and a breast form?

ANSWER

A specially fitted breast form is critical to maintaining balance.  The missing weight can cause neck, back, shoulder pain, headaches, and imbalance.  A properly fitted bra and breast form can help restore femininity to a woman's wardrobe.  Certified fitters can ensure you are wearing the right form and bra. A pocketed bra can help keep the breast form in place against the chest wall.  Breast shapes, surgery, and body types vary. An appointment should be made every two years or sooner to make sure your bra and breast form are still fitting correctly.

QUESTION

I am considering having reconstruction in the future.  Will my insurance still pay for mastectomy bras and breast forms?
